Employer Details Red Apple Education (www.redapple.com.au) Red Apple produces the interactive educational portal Skwirk.com.au, containing text and multimedia components designed to enhance learning. As a content writer for several subjects such as English, commerce and science, I liaised with the editor, subeditors and production manager throughout the writing process. I used the relevant syllabus as an outline for content and researched information using online and library resources. Because my work addressed a young audience (aged 11-16), it was necessary to employ a clear and concise style that explained complicated concepts in an engaging manner. In addition to my main duties, I occasionally proofread other writers' work and served as editor of the monthly staff newsletter for ten issues. POL Corporate Publications (www.pol.com.au) A small, privately-owned publishing company, POL produces magazines for clients such as BMW, Subaru, Gandel and Maison de la France (the French Tourist Bureau) as well as its own award-winning magazines, VIVE 'for women who mean business' and design, art and architecture title POL OXYGEN. As staff writer and editorial co-ordinator for several titles; VIVE, Fashion Capital, Symmetry and VIVE la France, I collaborated with the editors and liaised with the subeditors, art directors and freelance contributors. I also pitched my own ideas and conducted research and interviews accordingly. Other duties included maintaining contact databases, attending functions to represent the magazines and research for the editor. For my main title, VIVE, I edited 'Solutions' a section for innovative products and services and the people behind them, which involved locating and interviewing talent, finding and reviewing suitable products and sourcing artwork to accompany the copy. Conservation Volunteers Australia (www.cva.org.au) CVA is a nationwide conservation organisation that attracts and manages a number of volunteers in practical environmental projects. As a member of a Green Corps team, I answered to the team supervisor who directed the practical conservation work. During my contract I edited the Sangrado Reserve Environmental Audit, commissioned by Manly Council, and two local newsletters we issued. I was responsible for commissioning sections to team members, then collating, proofreading and editing the information. Students At Macquarie (www.sam.org.au) Soma magazine was the former Students At Macquarie annual creative arts publication. As one of three Soma editors, I was responsible for the publicity campaign to solicit submissions, leading to collating, proofreading and editing contributions, as well as managing a team of volunteers. The role also involved designing the layout, co-ordinating the production schedule and liaising with the printers and contributors. My co-editors and I also arranged the launch of the magazine, including catering, publicity and an award for the best contribution. |
